Hiker Dies In Sungai Bantang Forest Reserve Johor

Aussie hiker dies while hiking in Sungai Bantang Forest Reserve, Bekok Johor

Out of respect to Late  Chris Birchall, and request from his family.. I  has removed my original post which was based on several newspaper reports due to inaccuracies of information reported. I think information given by his close friend and family in the comments is more accurately described of what really happened... May his soul Rest In Peace

Sungai Bantang Forest Reserve or Sungai Bantang waterfall is another entry point to Taman Negara Endau Rompin, a well protected rainforest sacntuary.  Known also as Kampung Selai or Takah Tinggi Waterfall entry point. Visit this site at Flickr to view some photostream of this beautiful Sungai Bantang Waterfall.  Check out also website of Majlis Daerah Labis for more information - charges, facilities, permit, contact no. of Forestry Department etc

Condolences to Late Mr. Chris Birchall, may his soul rest in peace...

  1. The story as reported is incorrect. You have no idea what the circumstances were and what happened.

  5. Firstly, thank you for your apology.I will pass on your condolences to Chris' family and friends when we celebrate his life tomorrow.I understand that when we read articles,we accept what is written as factual. Until, that is,we know the individuals concerned.
So, to the facts. The trip had been planned meticulously. The leader has extensive military experience in the region and the participants were well prepared. Chris was physically fit and active. Only last month we had visited Krakatoa and he beat me to the top. There was no warning and no previous history of illness. The group immediately called for assistance and gave EXACT GPS co-ords including altitude readings. They were NOT lost, the Malaysian authorities could not find them as they were using a GARMIN device that could not go further than the last road which the group had left some hours previously. They also deployed markers to guide the rescuers but they were not seen.
